Performances

The Company of the Phoenix have a number of different performances and activities which we can utilise in an event.

Function Entertainment

Phoenix can provide a variety of entertainment to take place during your function, including singing, poetry, music, dancing, knighting ceremonies and comedy, historical displays, educational talks or even steel combat fighting.

If you are looking at booking Phoenix, you can use the descriptions below as a rough guide as to what choices you can make in customising your show.

Singing, Music and Dancing

The Company of the Phoenix is proud to have a number of very talented singers and musicians who specialise in medieval and renaissance music. Generally music forms part of every Phoenix performance, but the musical component can be done on its own for certain events, such as weddings. Phoenix also perform several medieval dances, both as display and as an interactive activity - we will teach you to dance.

Major Performance - "The Village Pillage"

This is the major show we performed at the major festivals in Brisbane over the last couple of years, and it is always popular with the public. We use a combination of humour and drama to show the less 'romantic' aspects of medieval life - the absolute tyranny of the feudal lord over those under him. This performance has two variations, and we are happy to use whichever one suits your event best. This performance lasts approximately 20-25 minutes, and involves the entire group.

Major Performance - "Tournament"

The medieval High Tournament is always popular with the crowd, with knights and men at arms showing their skills in a series of individual and melee combats, always performed for the entertainment of the ladies. We do not perform the tourney at the major festivals, as there are a number of other groups who do the tourney exclusively, and in the limited performance time available we prefer to offer the public an alternate entertainment. A tourney usually runs for approximately 30-40 minutes, and involves most of the group.

Major Performance - Death Takes a Walk in the Village

A disease infested stranger wanders into a country village and dies at the feat of the local lord. Soon, many of the people of the village are dying of the plague. Is it judgment from God? or something simpler?

Major Performance - "Cardinal Sin"

This was our performance which was rolled out at Brisbane Medieval Fayre 2004. With our usual mix of serious history and humour, the new show is designed to illustrate another of the darker aspects of medieval life - the conflict between the Church and the older traditions, as well as the new found aspirations of the average villager, brought about by the changes in society after the Black Plague in the 14th century. This performance lasts around 20 minutes, and involves the whole group.

The Encampment and Market

The Phoenix encampment is a large part of what we do - our entire area is like walking into a livingPart of the Phoenix encampment museum. Everything you see is carefully reproduced to as closely reflect as possible what you would see in a medieval market or encampment. At full size, the Phoenix encampment will generally include around 10-15 tents and pavilions, as well as several market stalls. Obviously we can scale this back to suit your event and the space available.

Medieval Games

A Child-size quintain and "horse"We have a large number of games from the medieval period which we use both as display, and as an interactive event. These range from board games, to medieval versions of soccer and badminton, as well as a child-size quintain (jousting target).

Major Performance - "A Farce"

In the period we portray, there was a move away from all drama being the domain of the Church (passion plays etc), and one of the major forms which arose was the farce. A farce involved taking a story which was known to the audience, and twisting it in such a way as to bring in current events and personalities - the forerunner of modern satire. This performance will run for approximately 20-25 minutes, and involves the entire group.

Static Displays

Phoenix can provide a number of static style displays for your event, from a guard of honour for a wedding, to displays of armour and archery equipment, as well as information sessions on medieval life. Let us know your requirements and we will try to accommodate them.
