As a historical framework, we decided to use the concept of a Free Company, somewhere in Europe during the years 1350 - 1450. This allows members to portray a wide variety of people (personas) - from Noble Ladies and merchants, tradesmen and archers, to men-at-arms and knights, tavern keepers and gunners. In early 2003 we expanded this, to have the Free Company encamped near a village, allowing members to represent local merchants and nobility, as well as travelers such as pilgrims, merchants and traders. All members meticulously research their costumes and equipment, using primary sources as far as possible (manuscripts, paintings, archaeological finds and so on), and then re-create them as close to the original as modern life allows. During our performances, everything you see in our encampment could be seen in a medieval village or camp, from the cooking and eating utensils, to the food and costumes, and the arms and armour.
We perform at large medieval fairs, such as History Alive and The Abbey Tournament, as well as much smaller events, such as school fairs and corporate functions, and weddings. We are also available for educational seminars and experiences, particularly for schools who are covering medieval history as part of their curriculum. Many of our members are also experienced in film and video work, and the group can supply both extras and props for producers at reasonable rates.
